Memorial Day 2021

The last Monday in May is set aside as a day for us to remember the men and women who have lost their lives in active military service. It is a day for us to be thankful for them because we would not have the lives we do without them.

It is a day for us to think about the love and care they had for their people. The sacrifices of these great men and women have given us so much to be thankful for—our very lives. There are no adequate words to express what we owe them.

As I sit here pondering life and how it could be so different, I can't help but also think of the families of the fallen. We owe them honor and remembrance as well. The sacrifice they made caused them more pain and suffering than most can possibly imagine. Not only the loss of their loved one but also the worry they went through, the sleepless nights, the nightmares, the emptiness they must have felt. We owe them our thanks and our love.

This Memorial Day happens to fall on a day that was a pivotal moment in my life, May 31, 2019. Two years ago today was when God, with Dr. Engle's help, saved my life. Many of you probably know I had an abdominal tumor that had to be removed, and it ended up being Ovarian Cancer. Two years have passed since that day, and as I remember that surgery and how thankful I am for it, it hit me that it may not have been possible without the sacrifices of the men and women who have lost their lives in active military service. Wow. What a sobering thought.

As I close, I want to remind us of one sacrifice made many years ago that has allowed us all things. Jesus Christ sacrificed Himself so that we would have a chance at eternal life. Because of the sacrifice He made, we can honor and remember the fallen military men and women. Because of the sacrifice He made, Dr. Engle was able to save my life.

Mark 10:45: "For even the Son of man came not to be ministered unto, but to minister, and to give his life a ransom for many."

Let us all be thankful for those who have given their lives in active military duty.

Let us all be thankful for the families of these great men and women.

Most importantly, let us be thankful for Jesus Christ, for without Him, none of it would have even been possible.

In Christian Love,

Leah Brewer
